Mononucleosis, also known as Glandular Fever or Mono, is a viral infection, caused by the Epstein Barr virus. It is very common in children and young adults worldwide. Mono is a common trigger for adrenal exhaustion. During mononucleosis treatment it is vital that the adrenal glands are considered as part of the plan. A diagnosis of mononucleosis (Epstein Barr or glandular fever) should be suspected when typical mono symptoms of sore throat, swollen glands, fatigue and fever appear. A swollen spleen, enlarged liver, nausea, loose stools, headache, body pains and respiratory symptoms may also be present.

Mononucleosis symptoms of enlarged glands and a swollen throat can make breathing and swallowing difficult. If you find you can't get air into your lungs or you can't swallow your saliva then an immediate trip to your doctor or hospital is advisable. Mononucleosis in children may also exhibit as a viral rash. This is normally short-lived disappearing in a couple of days from onset. If the itch is itchy or causing discomfort then an oatmeal bath or application of calamine lotion can soothe the irritation.

Regular meditation, yoga or deep breathing can help your body cope with the stress of having mono and make you more resilient to whatever life throws at you. Herbs like licorice and ginseng can boost adrenal function and help with mononucleosis treatment. These herbs can be taken as teas, capsules or liquid tinctures. Herbal remedies for mononucleosis in the chronic stage can also be very effective. Astragalus is an all time favorite for treating chronic immune conditions like recurrent mono. It should however not be used when there is a fever, an auto immune condition or when immune suppressant drugs are being used.

The cheapest and most accessible of the herbal remedies for mononucleosis is garlic. Garlic is a renowned cure-all for infections, and is readily available world-wide. Garlic can be eaten raw or added to soups, stir frys, teas, juices or salads. In the acute stage of mono, I recommend my patients use one clove a day. To eliminate excess mucous from the respiratory tract, herbs like garlic, horseradish and fenugreek are traditionally used. To relieve inflammation and pain like a red, sore throat, inflamed lymph nodes or muscle pain, the anti-inflammatory herbs like cayenne, ginger and turmeric are showing promising results. Mixed into some medicinal honey, these herbs and spices make a powerful throat soother.

The duration of illness is also considered for diagnosis. The cold or flu brought about by mononucleosis usually lasts longer, around 2 to 4 weeks, unlike common flu or cold lasting for only a few days. After the initial infection, some infected individuals may have recurrent symptoms. An example is a fatigue that lasts for several weeks or even months. Vitamins and minerals are a priority when looking for an infectious mononucleosis cure. Vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and selenium are all known for their immune-boosting actions. For fatigue, nutrients like magnesium and the B complex are invaluable. Olive leaf extract is the herb of choice for the acute, initial stage of mono. For long term, chronic cases, a combination of herbs including astragalus, echinacea and olive leaf extract are preferable.

Vitamin C is probably the best known infectious mono remedy. It helps boost immunity by increasing the production and efficiency of white blood cells - the cells that destroy the virus and clear it from your body. Vitamin C is also a powerful anti-inflammatory that can relieve the pain and swelling of a sore throat, swollen glands, and painful muscles.A diagnosis of mononucleosis (Epstein Barr or glandular fever) should be suspected when typical mono symptoms of sore throat, swollen glands, fatigue and fever appear. A swollen spleen, enlarged liver, nausea, loose stools, headache, body pains and respiratory symptoms may also be present.
