As long as people have been thinking to decorate themselves, they have been drawn to jewelry, and if you have some body piercings, you are no exception. While everyone is familiar with the various types of earrings out there, there is a chance that some pieces of body jewelry have passed you by. Whether you are interested in a new look or you are simply curious at what else is out there, take a look at some of the types of body piercing jewelry that you can find.

Captive Bead Rings
Also known as CBRs, these are essentially a broken ring with a small ball forced between the ends to close the gaps. For the most part, pressure will hold the ball in place, though there are two grooves where the points of the ring can lock into the ball. This is one of the most basic types of body jewelry there is. You'll find that while the ball is often made of steel, you'll also find semi-precious and even precious beads being used instead.

Barbells
Barbells look a great deal like the objects from which they take their name. There is a rounded bar of varying length, capped with two balls on the end. One or both of these balls will unscrew, allowing the jewelry to be taken on and off, and you will often find barbells used for industrial piercings, tongue piercings and nipple piercings. Like the captive bead ring, the balls can be quite bright or flashy, or just simple steel.

Plugs
Plugs are simply cylinders of steel, plastic, acrylic, wood, or stone that are made to fit a larger gauged piercing, usually in the ear lobs. Plugs have been found across the world, and you'll be able to find plugs that are intricately carved and decorated, or very very simple. To make their ears ready for plugs, people may do it slowly, moving from one size jewelry to the next, or they might have the piercing punched, removing a sizable amount of flesh in a single go.

Surface bars
These bars are made for surface piercings; this refers to the fact that there is no discrete pinch of flesh to pierce. A surface piercing will sit on a flat area of skin, and because of the contusions and the problems that these piercings suffer, they are usually thought to be fairly impermanent. Surface bars are shaped like staples, with the long bar sitting underneath the skin and the two prongs breaking the surface with two balls screwed to them.
