There is a lot to be said for Southern California fishing and for good reason. There happens to be a lot of different ways to fish Southern California, and although Socal may not have quite as many options as its Northern California counterpart, it certainly holds its own.

This has a lot to do with the great ocean fishing of Southern California along with the Baja California regions that are usually included in most Socal fishing reports. The fact of the matter is that Southern California has got some great fishing spots. This article touches on what you should be looking for in a good Southern California fishing report.

The Socal Fishing Report Checklist:

There are obviously going to be different reports for freshwater and saltwater fishing in Southern California. Some of the things to look for in Freshwater reports should include Bass fishing. The reports on Bass should include all of the Socal lakes that have Smallmouth and Largemouth bass and this should include lake facilities, launch fees and angler tips and secrets. You will also find mention of fishing for Catfish and Trout in the freshwater fishing reports as well as rivers, lakes and tributaries discussed in some length.

Saltwater Socal fishing reports are going to include the San Diego area, northern parts of Baja California and will probably go as far north as Santa Barbara and Oxnard. You will find discussions on Yellowtail, Halibut, Catalina Seabass, Shark, Sailfish, Dorado and Yellowfin Tuna. Depending on the report, you should find extensive and current information on which fish are biting, and where.

The Socal Spots:

There are many areas to fish in Southern California, and a good Socal fishing report is going to include everything from as far North as Santa Barbara to as far south as Baja. However some stop at the Mexican Border, which makes sense if you are truly interested in Southern California fishing exclusively.

A good fishing report is going to be categorized by county and mountain areas. This is the best way to organize a website that has many different fishing reports as a lot of fisherman will define their fishing territories in terms of county lines.

Other than that, there are going to be five major areas that a Socal fishing report would include, and that would be Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Big Bear and San Diego areas respectively.

The Socal Bottom Line:

The bottom line is that a good fishing report is going to include topographic maps, photos, regional locator maps, tips and tricks, bait and fish and everything in between. When you begin looking at Southern California fishing reports you will begin to see there are a lot of different fishing reports to choose from. You will probably discover that certain things are more important to you then others, and reports that expand on that information will be your favorites. Whatever you decide, remember there are a lot of great Southern California fishing reports available and they will all have something interesting to offer the Socal angler. Happy fishing!
