Having goals is an important part of running a successful business. A business without goals is one that is stagnant, it's no longer innovative, and it's ripe for the competition to surpass. You don't want any of that for your business.

It's a great idea to, at least once a year, but as often as quarterly, evaluate where your business is and set new goals for the next period of time until you evaluate again.

You might want to set goals for your income, number of clients, number of employees, products in your product line, milestones such as writing a book or launching a new website, or whatever makes sense for your business.

Think about where you want your business to be in five years and what you can do now to start bringing that vision into reality.

Goal setting might not seem like it has much to do with your day-to-day business life, but setting goals, writing them down and keeping them visible or reviewing them often gives you a chance to focus on what is important to you and to make business decisions that center on your goals.

For instance if you're thinking about taking on a new client or starting a new project, you can think about it in the context of your current goals. If the project is in alignment with where you want to go, your decision is easy. If not, you may have to do some serious thinking to decide if you really want the work or if you need to change your goals.

Goals give your work focus. If a big project like a book or a new product is on your goals list, then you've given yourself a deadline to work toward. Break that goal down into action steps and you have a plan to make that goal a reality.

In that way, goals can shape what you do and how you do it each day. If you set aside half an hour a day to take you closer to your goals. You are sure to find yourself meeting those goals faster than you ever thought possible, which will inspire and motivate you to even greater business success.

Take some time to brainstorm goals. Where do you want to be by the end of the year? Then decide which of your goals are realistic, measurable and actionable, and you'll be on your way to propelling your business forward with goal setting.
