With the advancement of Science, there is that notion that ailments and medical conditions may no longer be humankind's prime worry. Science and technology, afterall, have afforded us with medicines and medical procedures that may be promising is its effectiveness. Still, though, in the bustle of this 21st century breakthrough, there are some old, yet tested ways that continue to prove to be as effective as its modern-day conterparts. Massage therapy is one of those that have stood the ebbs of time.

But just what exactly is massage therapy?

Massage therapy, or Swedish massage, is one of the most common forms of massage therapy available in the United States. This form makes use of long and smooth strokes and movements, such as kneading, to target the topmost layers of the muscles.

This type of theraphy works by improving blood circulation, which, in turn, ensures that oxygen is distributed and is received by the tissues and cells. To this effect, muscle pains and cramps are relieved, while flexibility and improved mobility are achieved. Furthermore, the constant kneading movements help in getting rid of lactic acid and other bodily wastes, promoting better well-being.

A normal massage therapy session begins with the patient's basic health evaluation. If you are one who's receiving the massage, you will be asked to recount details in medical history and your lifestyle (eating habits, work, etc.). Then your therapist will temporarily leave the room so you can undress and lay yourself on the massage table. When your therapist returns, he or she will begin the session by applying oil or lotion on your skin. Then the massage will begin, starting with the back, down to the legs. The second part will have you turn face up as your therapist will continue the massage on your arms, necks, abs, and legs. You will be under the sheet for the entire time and only the areas massaged will be exposed one at a time. The whole session takes about forty to ninety minutes. After this, you will begin time to relax. Take note though, that you need to take time in getting up. The massage may leave you mildly dizzy or lightheaded.

People get massage therapy for two reasons: relief and relaxation. Some people go to massage therapy sesions to relieve themselves of pain and some medical conditions. There have been some reports of massage therapy being able to heal back pains, circulatory and respiratory complications, and muscle spasms and the like. Some people who have survived injuries or are on surgical rehabilitation, also get massage therapy to help them in their healing process. The relaxation purpose is partly due to the fact that massage therapy is a potent stress-reliever. Migraines and muscle strains are addressed and are eased by massage therapy.

So if you want healing, with a touch of leisure and peace of mind, you may want to try massage therapy for yourself. For something as old as massage therapy to last as long as it does today is an indication, if not a testament of its effective health and relaxation benefits.
