The effects of time, aging, and even gravity can have a negative effect on the appearance of your face. However, eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) and facelift surgery (rhytidectomy) are available to help minimize the effects of passing time.

BLEPHAROPLASTY
Baggy eyelids are not necessarily a sign of aging. Due to heredity, many younger patients have puffiness under their eyes or a heavy fold of skin which obscures the normal crease of the upper lid. The lower lid "bags" are caused by fat that protrudes from under the eyelid skin. Redundancy of the skin may be more severe in the upper lids, thereby obscuring the natural crease. Sometimes this skin can interfere with vision. To remove this excess skin can accomplish two goals: improvement of vision and enhancement of appearance.

In some patients, the problem is exacerbated by drooping of the brow skin. In such cases, a brow lift is the procedure of choice. Some surgeons are now performing eyelid surgery with the CO2 laser. The incision for the lower lids is made on the inside of the eyelid leaving no visible scar. The skin is then refreshed with the laser to diminish the fine wrinkles.

This procedure is commonly performed in conjunction with a facelift operation. However, younger patients often choose to improve their eyelids prior to the need for other facial surgery.

RHYTIDECTOMY
Exposure to the sun, as well as the aging process itself, can cause changes in the face of the mature, developed adult. These changes can include a deepening crease between the nose and mouth, fatty deposits under the chin, and a loss of definition in and around the jawline. Laxity or infirmity of the neck skin further exaggerates the appearance of aging. A face lift surgery may be able to help resolve these concerns.

The deep plane lift is a layered approach that allows tightening of the interlacing network of connective tissues joining the facial muscles underneath the skin. This procedure provides a longer lasting and more favorable result compared to just tightening the skin. Fat is removed from under the chin through a small incision. This removal of facial fat is able to both enhance the jawline and tighten the muscles in the neck.

The face lift surgery itself takes about four hours to perform. Patients may elect to be entirely asleep or under sedation, also referred to as "twilight sleep." Sutures will be removed after seven days following the facelift.

A growing number of men and women are beginning to have facial surgery performed in their early forties rather than waiting for the effects of aging to become more dramatic.
