Does Cooking Really Save You Money

One of the largest financial expenses that families have is for food. Many times we will end up making two or more trips back to the grocery store to pick up items we missed on the weekly trip. Most families go the grocery store weekly to replenish their food supply, but so often it turns out not to be enough. It is these extra return trips that end up costing us so much in the long run. It might seem that we could be better off just to skip the grocery store all together and just eat out all the time.

For many people who have schedules that do not allow very much time and opportunity for cooking regular meals at home, eating out has become a big part of family life. Not necessarily leaving the home to eat at a restaurant, but ordering in is a huge thing here in America. Mom does not have to cook or clean up a huge mess in the kitchen after working all day and usually the kids might even prefer it.

This might sound like a simple solution for the time issue, but is it better or worse for our pocketbook? Now that can be a little difficult to answer the same way for everyone. It will depend largely on how many people you are feeding, where you order it from, and what you order. The cost of eating out can sometimes be more cost effective and sometimes not. It is not always even more convenient if you have to go out to eat. Then another matter is the quality of the food you are ordering in or going out to eat. We know that some fast food choices are not as healthy as they should be.

Many restaurants have healthy food selections on their menu, but would it be just as easy to prepare some of these healthier menus at home. The only way to determine if eating out costs you more money than cooking at home, is to sit down and do some serious figuring. Then there is the time factor to consider as well. If it takes you one hour to prepare a dinner at home, but takes more than that to gather the family and go out, then it is not time efficient. If you order in well it might be.

If you like preparing your own meals at home, but do not have a lot of time, try doing some of the preparation on the weekend and storing it. Fixing several meals at once could save you time and money. Prepare your menus for the week and your list of supplies before you go to the food store and try to keep it simple. Home prepared meals do not have to be time consuming and elegant to be less expensive and healthy.
